What’s in a Name?

Naming a company isnโ€™t easy. If youโ€™re a creative, the challenge usually swings between extremes: a paralyzing flood of ideas, complete mental blockage, orโ€”worst of allโ€”concepts so unhinged that only you understand them.

When launching this venture, the name was my starting line. I wanted something memorable, concise without being generic, deeply personal, and unmistakably professional.

Hatching CanCanary Creative

Anyone who knows me personally knows my intense aversion to birds. Birds and I are not friends; we never have been. They swoop, I flee in terror. There is no ongoing warโ€”the birds won long ago, and I live in peaceful retreat.

Yet, there it is: a very prominent “Canary” right in the name.

Despite my bird phobia, there has always been something compelling about the canary. Beyond their bright yellow color and cheerful presence, history gave them a critical role: miners relied on canaries deep underground as trusted early-warning systems. When a canary was singing, miners knew the air was clear. If it went quiet, danger was near, and it was time to move fast.

I relate to that dynamic. A canary brings clarity to dark, confusing spacesโ€”using its voice to inform, alert, and guide others to safety. While I certainly intend for this business to thrive without any self-sacrifice, the core mission holds: I want to serve as a clear, steady voice for businesses, cut through the noise, and deliver creative work that genuinely helps people navigate forward.

Then comes the “Can.”

My mother, Connie, has been my greatest cheerleader, toughest advocate, and best teacher in both life and business. If I bring even half her wisdom and grit to this work, Iโ€™ll consider myself a success. Incorporating her into the brand was non-negotiable.

Take the “C” for Connie, add “an,” and you get C-an-Canaryโ€”Connie and me.

As an added bonus, the name handed me the perfect mantra for whenever self-doubt creeps in:

“Can Canary? Yes, she can.”
